 First Aid/CPR

Troop First-Aider. A Girl Scout first-aider is an adult who has taken Girl Scout council-approved first-aid and CPR training.  First-aiders are needed for physically demanding activities and other activities involving a potential for injury.  Safety-Wise (pg. 36)

A troop/group first-aider can be any adult and is often a troop parent already certified in First-Aid/CPR through their place of work.  Make sure however, that your troop first-aider is a registered Girl Scout.  A person wishing to qualify as a troop first-aider may participate in ANY American Red Cross or American Heart Association course and must have both First Aid and CPR training.  If your troop has girls under age 8, the first-aider will need to take the Community First Aid and CPR course. The Adult CPR & Standard First Aid course is appropriate for Troops with girls over age 8.

A description of most of the types of outings and activities done with Girl Scout troops can be found in Chapters 8-11 of Safety-Wise.   Each topic (ex. Hiking) includes the recommendations from GSUSA regarding “Emergency Procedures and First-Aid” related to that particular topic.  Leaders should read through these activity checkpoints when planning with their girls and note if a troop first-aider is required.

The American Red Cross Northwest Arkansas chapter can be reached at (479) 442-4291 or toll free at 1-866-692-7572 or on-line at www.nwarkansasredcross.org. For some troops it may be more convenient to travel to Conway for Red Cross CPR/First Aid training.  You can reach the Conway office of the American Red Cross by phoning (501) 329-3571 or on-line at www.arcfaulkner.net.

Please forward a copy of the certification credentials of your troop first-aider to your Membership Specialist to keep on file.  Thank you.
